Ruisch
Ruisch is a new musical project by Frans de Waard. Best known for his experimental work with Beequeen, Kapotte Muziek, Freiband and Modelbau, music with rhythm has also played an important role in his career. In 1984 he started his own record label Korm Plastics, releasing music from Arcane Device, Asmus Tietchens, Jim O'Rourke among others. He has worked for the pioneering Dutch tape label Staalplaat (1992-2003) and since 1986 as a reviewer for his own publication Vital (now Vital Weekly), a magazine which has been an online source for underground music since 1995, and which celebrated its 1000th issue in 2015. In 2016 Timeless published in France his first book, an autobiography of life in Staalplaat titled This Is Supposed To Be A Record Label. In 1995 he started Goem as a solo project, later to become a trio and ending as a solo project, in which he explored very minimalist beats and synthesizer treatments. Later on, with Roel Meelkop, he had a duo called Zèbra, later renamed Wieman, who specialized in sample-heavy 'melt-pop'. As QST he had in recent two CDs with ambient dance/house music. Early 2019 he came across a sample pack with trap and grime sounds and out of curiosity he downloaded it. He thought that if he would play it slow, you could do "trap hop", a modern-day version of 'trip-hop'. In slowing it down, he learned, that it was more akin to the world of reggae and dub music, which reminded him of a very silly late 90s project he did, Captain Black. Dub music has always been an interest and with the new technology now available he set to work and started Ruisch (old Dutch word, Ruis means ‘hiss’), in which he combines the dub rhythms, reggae samples, industrial beats and lots of reverb and delay, which scatters all the beats and electronics over the place. You could think of each new piece being a dub of the previous but it is more than that. It spaces and rocks out and marks a different step in a long musical career. His interests in music creation range from ambient to noise to what he describes as 'silly disco music'. He has played concerts in Europe, USA, Canada, Russia and Japan, and collaborated with Steven Wilson, Jaap Blonk, Andrew Liles, Radboud Mens, Keiji Haino, Pan Sonic and others.
